How do you know if your staff are really happy at work?

Updated: Mar 29, 2022

Is it because they say they are? or is it because they smile when you walk by? or could the answer be in their attendance rate?

High one day absenteeism rates suggests one thing and one thing only... CBA Syndrome! This syndrome is medically recognised as someone being lazy, or from an HR perspective, is someone who is really not happy at work. One day absences are a tell-tale sign of employees not feeling valued, bored in their job, hate the people they work with, therefore they really can't be arsed to come in and fulfil their side of the bargain.

How much does it cost your organisation?

According to the Office of National Statistics it was estimated that 141.4 million working days were lost during 2018 due to sickness, equivalent to 4.4 days per worker; 27.7% were for minor illnesses which lasted between 1 to 2 days.

Tips to curb one day absences

  • have a consistent absence reporting process for staff to follow

  • follow up every absence with a return to work meeting

  • ensure your absence policy is clear and concise and follow it to the letter
